Bonsai from the Bonsai Society of Trinidad & Tobago | Bonsai, Trinidad, TobagoBonsai's experience There is something spectacular about the bonsai pronounced (Bone Sigh), which captivates the hearts of many horticultural enthusiasts. Perhaps it is the fascination of cultivating miniature trees through this ancient art or the many creative styles that can be achieved by combining several techniques, including pruning and wiring, to create an effect that is pleasing to the eye. Whatever the way you look at it, bonsai is art and everything changes when you decide to apply love and technique to manipulate the roots and train the plant in twists and curves. Bonsai is the Japanese art of cultivating trees in a container and, through repeated prunings, not allowing them to reach their natural size. Recently, the Oriental Horticultural Club (EHC) was hosted by a superior member of the TT Bonsai in a workshop on the introduction to Bonsai. A group of 20 members traveled to Diego Martin to learn about the art of the bonsai and on arrival they were given a tour of their garden. Bonsai specimens could be seen everywhere; each beautiful but different from the other. The bonsai were created from many different species of resistant plants, especially those with small leaves. The variety of bonsai plants we saw included ficus (Ficus benjamina), pomegranate (Punica granatum), schefflera (Schefflera arboricola), cherries (Prunus sp.), Chinese elm (Ulmus parvifolia), Japanese boxthorn (Serissa japonica), Lucaena (Lucaena sp.) and the common bougainville púr After the tour, we were given a demonstration of a simple bonsai technique in a ficus tree. Our hosts provided exceptionally clear explanations and demonstrations about what is required to produce a bonsai plant, of the types of plants suitable for bonsai, types of soil to be used, pruning and wiring techniques, appropriate pots and how to water and fertilize the plant after repotting. We learned how to prepare the root ball, how to select branches to wire and what part of the branch should be pruned. It was really amazing to witness the transformation of the ficus, at the end of the time process. We were all eager to practice the technique we had learned and a member chose Fukien tea or the Filipino tea tree (Eyretia buxifolia), a very popular plant for bonsai. Being a evergreen tropical bush grows well in our climate. This plant produces small white flowers that become small berries, thus changing the appearance of the bonsai at several times of the yearAfter a brief break we were introduced to a more advanced technique used to produce a bonsai plant and some members this was the most interesting part of the workshop. This is the account of a member: "The ashoka tree (Polyalthia longifolia) like the four in my garden, has large leaves, a conical shape and can grow well over 40 feet tall, so my interest in how the specimen in the sample would become a bonsai plant. The specimen was about four feet tall with a diameter of the trunk of about five inches. Two Bonsai TT members disappeared the unwanted leaves and bark, and then used power tools to cut, scrape, burn and form the top of the marked points, which reminded me of a lightning-threatening tree. The branches were connected to grow in the desired form. Skill and artist were on display while the two men worked on this specimen. After all this was done and were satisfied with the form, a liquid was brushed on the top of the naked burnt top to give it an old look (this would whiten more over time), the roots were cut and released from some soil, and the tree was transplanted into another container. The floor was spiced several times to remove air pockets that could cause erosion and a generous amount of water was applied to the base. Now I am looking at my four Ashoka trees grown with new eyes!" The members of the EHC enjoyed the workshop and the hospitality of the TT Bonsai and many of them now want to try a bonsai plant of their own. If you are interested in learning art, Bonsai TT can be contacted at 770-8340.
